The foam surface grips the fabric so the fabric doesn't move around when ironing. Both sides of the board are covered with foam so the board doesn't shift around. What is also nice is that it is the width of my ironing board, so that is where it stays most of the time. Worked better than expected. But after just a week I noticed 4 spots protruding to the surface of the foam. They were round and hard. Almost feel like knobs or rounded screws. I will be returning in fear they will get worse. I will try another steady betty pressing mat.
