You plug in power, insert two drives, press a button, and it clones — period. Corrected Standalone Clone Steps 1. Insert source drive (Toshiba 1TB HDD) into Bay 1 (top slot) 2. Insert target drive (Samsung 870 EVO SSD) into Bay 2 (bottom slot) 3. Power on — Plug in the universal power adapter to a UPS (no interruptions) 4. Toggle middle button to RED dot (COPY/CLONE mode) "may have to hold button 3 sec) + Wait for drives to light up ~10sec" 5. Press the clone/start button — The unit begins sector-by-sector copy 6. Review: It is fast - I bought this to quickly clone/duplicate drives. What caught my eye was the 22GB/s transfer rate. It's probably 22GB/s if your high-end, high-dollar write drive supports it. My inexpensive, Inland Pro, 256GB drives were copied repeatedly in 14:30. That works out to 17GB/s which is way faster than a PC connection. I duplicated/ 4 256GB drives in an hour and five minutes. Amazing. Paid for itself on the first use. Getting the unit to duplicate drives is not intuitive. Plug the source drive into slot 2. The destination drive is plugged into, you guess it, slot 1. Power on & wait a split second for the drives to be recognized. Next, press and hold the PC/Copy button until red. Finally press Copy. A bunch of blinky lights display the status.

**Q: Lots of bad reviews is it as good as people say?**
A: I'm using two of these Startech USB 3.1's at the same time with 16TB and 18TB HDDs in them for a total of 4 drives without any problems.

**Q: I have a HD with unreparable bad sectors but still running. If I want to replace the HD, is this the best way to go? No need to by new OS?**
A: If by unrepairable you mean SMART Current Pending Sector then offline duplication is NOT recommended. Tested on SDOCK2U33RE with a 1.5TB drive w/ 6 reported errors the duplication was still at 0% after 24 hours. Also be advised this model is NOT capable of retrieving SMART data over USB (newer chipset than older models). You're going to have to use ddrescue or such.

**Q: Can I use as docking station**
A: I had the same question. Yes, it can be used as a dock, both bays functioning at the same time with hard drives in each bay. But be advised that this unit cannot actually achieve the advertised 10Gbps speeds -- even if using 2 SSDs in RAID 0 -- because this unit only has a single SATA III controller for both drive bays, which caps the total access speed at 6Gbps.

**Q: Can I clone a Samsung 970 evo to any other m2 ssd (intel, hp, ect)?**
A: No, SDOCK2U313R supports 2.5" & 3.5" SATA SSD/HDD drives not NVMe based SSDs such as the Samsung 970 Evo.

The product is very practical, cloned my SSDs with no issues. No need to attach to a computer, great price. Watch out for the flipped numbers, I'm so glad other reviewers brought that up. I can't imagine what made StarTech think anyone would think of Disk 1 being the target and Disk 2 being the source.
