How dark does this dye actually get? Is it even remotely close to black?** A: It's not black. It's dark gray on white items. After reading some of the comments, I wondered if anyone remembered the color wheel. If you "overdye" you won't get dark gray. You will get a hint of the fabrics original color with the dye. I dyed a green & white plaid shirt - 60% cotton 40% polyester. I got dark gray and brown. This was perfectly fine, because I was pairing with tan dockers. I would like RIT to make a gothic black though! Die color wheel die! lol I "cook" my items for two days. Polyester is not true fabric. It will resist you to madness. Keep it hot. I buy a slightly bigger size for expected shrinkage. Then I have a dryer for dyed items. Will this work?** A: I have a gray polyester backpack I was dying for my child for back to school. She wanted to dye it black and design it her own way so I went a bought dye and color stay. It did not work for me personally I wash doing the instructions and it wasnt work all the dye just wash out AND! I actually left it sit over night because during the day (4) it wasnt doing anything so I decided to leave it over night it hopes at least the flowers were gone.
