Adam Rifkin wrote, directed and starred in this sporadically funny National Lampoon comedy built on a sole, sustained joke. The story is set in the prehistoric era, but the caveman characters speak in our modern language about matters of sex, drug use, relationships, and much else. The most progressive of these distant ancestors is Ishbo (Rifkin), a bespectacled intellectual unappreciated for his inventions ("Look! I just created pants!"), despised by his macho father, the tribal chief (David Carradine), and upstaged by his rugged brother (Hayes MacArthur), who is engaged to the girl (Ali Larter) Ishbo loves. Rifkin squeezes in some successful sight gags (at a peak of sexual starvation, Ishbo does the customary caveman thing by clubbing a girl over the head, but he sends her off a cliff in the process). A turn in the story sending a frustrated Ishbo on a solitary stroll, and into the hands of a warrior-lesbian tribe, takes an unexpected twist leading to an even more unexpected ending.
