I'm sure you could fabricate something similar and use the hardware, but the instructions included are really specific to the 1/8th of an inch and correct placement of hardware is crucial to assembly. It includes directions for all cuts for panels from 48"x96" sheets that maximize the total amounts of wood without waste. also that dvd is pretty step by step. When installing the pistons to frame i realized how crucial and glad i measured correctly all mounting points. All n All its was a fun project can be done in a weekend, I used the 3/4 plywood option ran me about 250 for supplies and paint, and its a sturdy piece.hope this helps... **Q: what weight capacity can the hardware handle** A: Well, I'm a big guy ... 5'11'' & 240lbs.. My wife is (Whoa...I almost messed up there!!!). Anyways, I think this bed, once assembled correctly, will easily handle 500lbs. How many other pieces of wood and what type? $200 to $500 is a wide range.** A: For a queen size Murphy bed , you will need 4 sheets of 3/4"plywood, 2 sheets of 1/4" plywood , some 1"X2" frame struts and some solid wood. You can also build the entire bed out of plywood if you cut the wood yourself which cost a lot less. In fact, this one is coming two years late. I bought this kit and built my murphy bed over two years ago. I love it! However three days ago one of the gas prop struts broke. So I looked on Amazon to find replacements, but I couldn't find an exact match for length and pound capacity. A pair run anywhere around $50. Many could be used, but without the exact same size, I would be stuck making adjustments. So I called Easy DIY Murphy Beds, and asked if I could get a replacement gas strut directly from them. Even thought over two years have passed, and I never sent in a warranty card, they said they would send me a pair free of charge and also pay the shipping and handling. They arrived today. Many thanks to Nadia of customer services! Regarding the actual build: I'm handy with tools, and build decks and fences. However this bed requires a lot of cuts. So I had all the wood cut at Home Depot, and marked them as they were being cut so I knew what was what. Once home, it took me about 2 hours to build from start to finish, without help and using power tools instead of hand tools. I feel this might take several hours longer for some people with less hands-on experience. It will be worth it though! I love it, especially on lazy mornings.
