The pulls are quite strong and take a lot of abuse. The pulls are just over a quarter inch in diameter, however, you could only lock the large compartment. There are 4 other external compartments. I use mine as an under-seat carry-on. **Q: Will this be big enough for a 7 day trip to Europe?** A: Depends on your needs and style of travel. I don't think I can pull off a one week trip using this backpack as my only bag. It'll fit 2 changes of clothing + basic toiletries and a pair of shoes. So, if you do a wash every other day you may be able to pull it off. But this bag fits a ton of stuff. I always like to pack extra clothes so I have options when I travel and I was able to fit everything I needed for a 3 day trip, with spares. I love the little pockets and compartments to fit things in to keep stuff organized. The back is padded and very comfortable. The handles make it very easy to maneuver if you put in in the overhead bin on a plane.
