American Heritage: Sailor Boy Pilot Bread is proudly baked in the USA for a century. A modern version of hardtack, the long-shelf life cracker has been nourishing and delighting hunters, hikers, soldiers, adventurers, and travelers alike with a delicious, sturdy, snack cracker. Long-lasting and Wholesome: Pilot bread is a kind of biscuit, or cracker, with simple wholesome ingredients and very little moisture. It has been described as a saltine cracker without the salt, or a flat dry biscuit. It is crunchy and mild, but nowhere near flavorless. Stored in a cool, dry place, it has an extraordinarily long shelf life, could be decades, or longer! Its resistance to spoilage and versatile use makes it a favorite for household emergency kits, preppers’ survival supply cache, disaster-relief food supply, earthquake preparedness kits, and the like. Ways to Enjoy: Sailor Boy Pilot Bread - for some, it's soul food: Mothers give it to their babies to teeth on or as baby food, back-country hikers stock it in their kit, and seldom does a hunting party venture out in the woods without a supply stashed away in someone's backpack. Consider some of these topping ideas: peanut butter and jelly, smoked salmon or salmon spread, cream cheese, Nutella with bananas and strawberries, or simply toasted with butter. For a new take on a tuna melt or mini pizza. Each delicious, versatile biscuit sustains and delights.

$12.00 for a Bag of Crumbs
The product itself is good. Not saying anything negative about Sailor Boy. However, be very weary of the seller, as they obviously take absolutely NO measures to assure the product arrives as it should. And PLEASE, don’t saying “it’s crackers, they’re fragile”. They are a very hardy cracker (manufactured in Virginia and shipped to ALL parts of Alaska) on a regular bases.....in the condition as you would expect. I would just think that for $12.00, the seller would take some measures to assure no (or at least) very minimal breakage. Buy at your own risk......

Alaskan Secret
Sailor Boy Pilot Bread is an Alaskan Secret. Everybody in the bush has at least 3 boxes of pilot bread: one at home, one at camp and another in the hunting cooler. It goes well with sweet or savory toppings, almost never goes stale and if it does you just pop it into the oven for a couple minutes to toast it up and its good again. As an Alaskan that no longer lives in Alaska, being able to buy this on Amazon is AMAZING - truly getting a taste of home.

Stale and broken
This review is for the last two boxes I purchased. A couple of months ago I purchased one box out of curiosity and we loved them. The crackers in that box were crispy and every cracker was perfect. Based on that I purchased two more boxes. When we opened one of those I was shocked to see most of the crackers smashed. They were also stale and had kind of a soft crumb - not crispy and dry at all. They did not taste fresh. We opened the next box right away and it was the same - stale and smashed. The outer packaging was not crushed and there were no holes in either the outer or inner packaging so it's a mystery how they ended up pulverized. We were disappointed that we spent the money for two boxes of nasty crackers we can't eat. I don't understand how there can be such a lack of quality control in such a simple product.

Yay! Finally available.
I've been trying to find these in the 48 for almost 10 years. Excellent, sturdy cracker. Great for camping/backpacking.My kids love them plain and make microwave pizzas on them.Edit: While these are available at shops in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, they have been nearly impossible to find anywhere else. The price is really not too bad considering you are getting 2 LBS of these delivered to your door. If you need cheap regular crackers, buy saltines at your local grocery. SBPB are serious, not-messing-around, just-put-it-in-your-pocket-and-it-will-not crumble, pilot bread.

Don't confuse this with hardtack
The price is right ($9.99), so I thought I would try it out. It is fine for emergencies or regular use. It is not hardtack, though, as it contains ingredients like palm oil and preservatives. I could not find any solid information of shelf life, but most references seemed put it in single digit years as opposed to hardtack which can be stored for decades. So, don't plan to store this for really long term emergency use, unless you can find better information on LONG term storage. It is easier to use than hardtack and it is not hard as a rock and doesn't need to be processed in some way to avoid breaking a tooth.

Excellent Pilot Bread Cracker
Have had the Mountain House, Future Essentials, Saratoga Farms, and the USGI MRE crackers. They're all good, and I like 'em all just fine, but the Sailor Boy Brand are IMO the best. They're considerably larger than the other brands, and they're a crisp, solid, substantial example of the baker's art. They're pleasantly neutral flavored - very much like an unsalted saltine, if you will - and not at all slightly sweet like Mountain House or Saratoga Farms. The upside is that at their regular price, a 2 lb. package is less than half the regular price of a 2 lb. #10 vacuum-sealed can.Downside, of course is that they likely don't have anywhere near the 25 year shelf life of the canned varieties. They'll likely store a whole lot longer than ordinary grocery store saltines (and I've got some saltines that are 5+ years old and are still palatable); just rotate 'em out a little sooner. These are good - highly recommend.

The Perfect Pilot Bread Arrived in Perfect Condition.
We haven't been able to find Sailor Boy Pilot Bread in the lower 48 States for over 10 years. In despair we've made our own (like rocks) or tried Mountain House #10 cans (OK but not SB thickness, flavor, and hardiness.)Seeing Sailor Boy Pilot Bread for sale in the US again, really made our day. (Honestly!) These had been our main stay for 2 month long canoe expeditions in the Canadian sub-Arctic and beyond the tree-line..) and 3 month long truck camping in SW Utah,SW Wyoming,Nevada, and the Arizona Strip.I was worried by a prior review by another purchaser of receiving "a bag of almost bread crumbs), I was somewhat anxious placing an order for 6 boxes (and needing to order an additional 6 boxes soon.)Our order arrived well packed. I tried the jiggle/shake test-sounded OK for solid contents. I opened 2 boxes, and they were in perfect shape..so I believe that another reviewers poor experience with quality may have been a fluke, and that he requested a replacement.

Excellent storage cracker / bread replacement, that tastes great!
Saw these on a YT video, explaining how they are prized in Alaska - for long-term food stores. I find them quite tasty, and expect they will go well with many foods. These are a modern version of old fashioned hardtack, but much softer - and easy to eat. And fewer crumbs, than other crackers - which is nice. These supposedly can be stored in temperature extremes, so excellent for storage in camps, campers, vehicles, boats, etc.Try a package out, and if you want more - buy them cheaper in bulk. Enjoy!
