A coworker first gave me one of the gray ones (602, I think) and I thought I was in love.. About 6 months later he gave me a natural one and I realized that I didn’t know what love really was until that moment. I swear these pencils are magic! Smooth and dark without hurting your hand. I like the extra firm over the softer ones because I tend to have a heavier hand when making marks so the tip seems to last longer. That being said, I wouldn’t cry if I was given the gray ones because there’s not a massive difference in performance…..but the natural are definitely my favorite. They dulled too fast for me to write with. I don't remember their designation, they we're given to me. Palomino Pearl is all I remember. I linked them enough to find the harder graphite ones this time. These 602 whatever's are great for writing. The grey painted ones. **Q: Is it number 2? Or more broadly, will it work on standardized tests?** A: The Blackwing 602 is a 2B lead, which is softer and darker than a #2. Would it work on a standardized test? probably. But they are not a #2 pencil so use at your own risk. For a number two you can't go wrong with a Dixon Ticonderoga. FYI when shopping a #2 lead in USA is equal to a HB lead internationally. You could call it the pencil lead metric system... **Q: What is the difference between the 602 and the standard blackwing pencils?** A: You need to read the descriptions or go to the website. I like the Pearl and the 602's but just for short writing periods. For whatever reason my hand gets tired with both the pearl and 602 after much writing. I feel like I have to press harder. Both are soft leads. I prefer the Natural which is harder than a 602 and wears down less, and is darker. I don't have to press harder to get the look I like. I have about 10 different pencils I bought off eBay to see what I liked. Each one is different but similar. I love allll their pencils, but I'm sticking with the Natural as my favorite. Excellent for writing music, specifically, but also words, and drawing, which people are probably doing more often than writing music with them. Which is too bad. A lost art, writing music. People still do it! I do. To what end, I have no idea. But these are the pencils to waste your life with, if that's your plan! The quality is just spectacular, and the graphite is >chef's kiss<. You really do get what you pay for. Three dollars for a pencil?
