While it draws power from the cameras, I don't notice any quicker degradation of the batteries. It's small so it's easily packed in my camera bag. I love that it has both input and output jacks to use for other connections (like a Rode wireless mic). The dead cat wind supressor is durable and somewhat heavy for it's size, but it works well.
