They’re a great way to encourage a child to passively learn whilst they eat their meals etc. Review: Encourages children to practise counting items not just number recognition - This has been a great help for my son who has struggled with sequencing numbers and counting the correct number of items. He loves the placemat and sits independently practising his numbers. It's opened the door for me to be able to practising counting items with him as he tends not to count methodically and so double counts items sometimes. Because he's already interested in the placemat he will let me show him to count the first row, then the second, then the third and he is getting the hang of it now. Our placemats are slightly textured so are not completely smooth. Contrary to another reply to this question please do NOT use baby wipes to clean our placemats (or in our opinion any food surface) - baby wipes are full of all sorts of chemicals including phenoxyethanol, malic acid, tocopheryl acetate and propylene glycol! To care for our placemats simply wipe them clean after use with a soft cloth - a mild detergent such as Fairy Liquid is fine.
