Wire brushed and cleaned it first though. Worked well. Would imagine it would be ok underneath too as long as any underseal was removed and you were back to metal. **Q: Can this be painted over gloss on a garage door?** A: I've only used it to paint a wrought iron gate. Used a wire brush to remove any rust or old paint and it had an excellent finish. Couldn't say if it would have the same finish on a garage door. **Q: Do I need to prime first if I am painting shower frame with this metal paint?** A: No as it's a primer rust killer and top coat in one. Just remove any loose flacking original coverings befor using this. **Q: why is it advertised as smooth black and change to satin at the checkout** A: I guess because rather than drying to a hammered finish this paint dries smooth.
