Review: Easiest 5 star I’ve given to date! - This might be one of the easiest five stars I’ve given to date, Demon in White is a masterpiece chonker that is an out of this world scintillating throat punch of a good time, can a throat punch be a good time? It is now. As this series goes on, you can see the progression of Ruocchio’s writing, and it’s such a beautiful thing to experience. His prose just continues to be something spectacular and just puts me in awe, especially with the story attached to that wonderful prose. Ok, I’ll stop, I might this entire review gushing on his prose if I don’t stop now. If it isn’t obvious, this is the best novel in the series so far, and it’s not even close. This book really had it all, I was on the edge of my seat with some action heavy scenes, I was almost in tears and had the biggest smile on my face because at a certain point my heart just felt whole, and I could reach through the pages and hit someone! Not to mention a new species called the Irchtani is also introduced, I love this book. There was a part in this when describing the Cielcin and The Scourge of Earth, Syriani, that my mind immediately went to the film, 300. There’s a scene in the movie where Xerxes stands towering over everyone and calls himself a god, with all the jewelry he’s wearing and hanging off of him. I realized that the Cielcin and Syriani may be based on Xerxes and the Persians of that film and history of Greece. And I’ll even go as far as saying that this book got some inspiration from The Battle of Thermopylae and that film, once I made that connection, I could see different things and remember how certain scenes played out because Hadrian certainly feels like Leonidas, though that film turns out a little differently than this, I really do feel like that connection I felt is real. “And if you burn long enough and bright as I have done, you come back to that simple truth of childhood: the world of the scientists, of engineers and mathematicians, does not exist. We live in stories, in the demon-haunted world of myth. We are heroes and dragons. Evil and divine.” When I said this book has it all, I absolutely meant that. The action in this book is dialed up to a different level, the intensity of each scene felt like the last for a lot of people, and there were times that it was the last, but my goodness was it incredible! It had the perfect medium of getting into the fast paced story during a lot of the action scenes while also slowing down and letting the reader soak in information. Hadrian and co finally get to go to the Great Library to try to get some questions answered, and honestly while there are some pretty incredible scenes throughout, this may be my favorite part of the entire novel, because while this is a bit of a slow down area, it has the most impact and it is just absolutely riveting as some questions are answered and new ones arise. The character development of not only the enigmatic Hadrian, but all the characters continues to be a very bright spot in this series, the world-building is top notch, and sucks me in to the story even more, every time. With that being said, the narration by Samuel Roukin is still the main force that helps immerse me into the story, I’ll continue to sing his praises, because he makes the story even more unforgettable the way he gets into the characters and their emotions, I absolutely love when a narrator feels like they love what they are reading and that exudes in his narration. I honestly can’t say enough about how good his narration, you have to listen to the audio of this, you’re missing out on something truly special if you are not. Review: What a book... - What a book! Yes, it is a large book, but the story moves so smoothly. Every word, every page is deliberate to get you from point A to point B. A lot and I mean a lot of stuff happens in this novel. Demon in White has one of the most significant time jumps out of any book I've ever read. A whopping several decades and the story itself spans a few more. Hadrian is a much different character when DiW starts. He is a more calculated and seasoned protagonist. It is very interesting to follow him now because we didn't really get to see him get to this point, but over time in the story you are given little hints at to why he is the way he is now. There are a couple short stories that take place between the ending of Howling Dark and the beginning of Demon in White. I personally haven't read those stories yet but I didn't feel like I needed to because this book did such a great job filling you in when the time was right. The story of Demon in White like I said earlier is expansive. It spans a few decades. So much of what we have been gearing towards since book one comes to light. Plus a lot of information is unearthed, but also there are still some questions dangling in the air. Now where book book one and two felt very cohesive and standalone-ish, Demon in White on the other hand feels like only that start of a longer arc in the Sun Eater world. I know that seems odd to say but it makes sense (well for me at least, lol). Demon in White is a true testament to what makes such a fantastic Space Opera. Christopher Ruocchio is detailed and widely gifted in is storytelling craft. It is exhausting. I wish the author would spend as much time developing and building the characters as he does on the microscopic details that do absolutely nothing to move the story forward. He is not an attorney being paid by the word or by the hour it took to write those words. Build the world, absolutely—but don't spend chapters building the bacteria on the wings of the ant. If you love great world-building and can handle skipping chunks of page-filling fluff to get back to the actual plot, the meat of the story is worth it.
