The upper layer is soft and very absorbent, even on heavy days. I use their "Day" pads and "Night" pads (which are longer in the back to catch leaks in bed) and they're all great. I do wish there was the option to buy them without the individual plastic wraps. Those are convenient when you need to carry them in your purse and keep them clean, but at home I feel wasteful unwrapping every single one.
