I bought this book originally because I loved the illustrations and the way the author did The Three Billy Goats Gruff. I remember The Three Little Pigs story as a child but I don't remember it being exactly like this. I do not recall the pigs being eaten by the wolf or all of the clever ways that the wolf tried to trick the third Pig into coming out of his house. Also the beginning is very sad the mother made her children leave because she didn't have the money to take care of them. I don't like that at all. It's just sad to me and I would imagine it would be sad to children as well. Mom and babies are shown crying on the very first page. Anyhow I just think that no matter how beautiful the illustrations are, the storyline may have a few of the original lines, but it does not incorporate into the story how hard the third Pig worked on his house as opposed to the first two pigs who were lazy, and just wanted to play if I remember correctly. They built their houses quick, while the third Pig worked day and night to finish his house. Why not just have the pigs run off to their brother's house instead of having them eaten by the wolf? Children don't need to have that image, not young children. I feel like this book might would give him nightmares, I read it to my 2-year-old tonight but I changed the words while I was reading it. And then I realized there was a bunch of other stuff in it that I don't even remember from the story when I was a kid. Like the apple tree and the butter churn. And then at the end the wolf gets boiled alive and the only surviving young Pig eats the wolf at the end. To me being boiled alive is terrifying for one. And secondly the most important part of the story is missing. We could do without all the eating each other and actually instill some morals and standards into the book like the safety of the pigs and the amount of work and thought and deliberation that it takes to keep your family safe. All the kids could have easily went to the third pigs house and been saved at the end, and then they would have all lived happily ever after and children wouldn't have to worry about having nightmares. I don't know that's just my two cents. I don't think it's appropriate, especially to be labeled a "nursery rhyme" book... for children aged 2-5... maybe back then when the author was a kid or when he wrote it, I know books were a lot more vulgar back then but children are a lot more sensitive and so are adults these days and I think that it's for the better to be that way. (For our children at least. ) One of those reasons is to protect your child from nightmares and feeling sad from a bedtime story. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beautiful illustrations *by K***O on Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2022* The story is the more traditional one where the first two pigs get eaten. The final part where the wolf tries to trick the 3rd pig out of his brick house is a version I had not heard before. The illustrations were beautiful and the book was rendered in a very artistic way. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A "back to basics" retelling of the classic story *by S***A on Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 1999* When my older son became fascinated with the Three Little Pigs after seeing a version of it on Sesame Street, I did some research on this site to decide the best version to buy him in book form, and decided on this one. I was glad I did---as he really enjoyed many readings of this version until he moved onto new interests! It's not for the faint hearted, as the first two pigs do get eaten, and the pictures of the houses falling show sticks all over and pigs flying away, but that's life in fairy tales! The text is straightforward, the pictures are clear and well done.
