yeah it's a soft rubber plastic hybrid. so it doesn't hurt, i hit myself a few times and shrugged it off like nothing happened. except when i hit myself in the balls. that's the only thing i can think of that will hurt.

The manufacturers developed a type of handle that acts like a slip knot system that is supposed to make it easier to adjust the length. Instead, it just slips out and cannot stay at the length you specified, so I just tie knots. Also, the handle system is great because it is two loops for a couple of fingers.
