Even though the instructor didn't require us to frequently read this text I chose to do so to be better grounded in the concepts
I used this textbook for an undergraduate epidemiology course. Even though the instructor didn't require us to frequently read this text I chose to do so to be better grounded in the concepts, ideas, and methods required in epidemiology. The instructor was not the best, and used images in his slides from this text, however I thought it best to read it on my own to help clarify his teachings. Sometimes the descriptions of the different concepts, theories, ideas and examples were dense and complex requiring constant re readings. The book describes the major study designs used in public health which include: clinical random trial, cohort, cross-sectional, and case control. I appreciate that book had examples of the topics currently discussed, however I felt that this book would have been stronger if there had been practice questions after the conclusion of each trial. I think that this would have been especially important for getting the hang of the two by two table; which I did, but as a result of practicing such questions during class and related to class lectures. This book is beneficial in providing the background information for certain topic in public health, however sometimes I believe that once certain topics are explored further the writing detracts from the clarification of each topic. Anyways I guess this textbook would be good for any undergraduate or graduate epidemiology course. I gave this textbook three stars because of the writing which at times makes simple concepts, ideas, and theories harder to grasp. I also felt that there should have been review questions regarding the topics described in the previous chapter, similarly, there should be a final review for all the topics in the book. I can't compare this text to any other textbooks used for epidemiology because I haven't used any others, however this does provide a good description of basic concepts and theories used in public health. Additionally, I can't talk about the online access that comes with this textbook since it was not used in my class. The textbook came well within Amazon's expected delivery schedule as described, further it should be good for anyone studying epidemiology and public health. I gave it three stars since it was okay and could have been better, as I described earlier. This is a good textbook. This is a subject that could easily be very dry, but the author writes in a clear, engaging, non-patronizing manner that made it actually pleasurable to read. The author included humor and a great multitude of real-life examples to bring home the point- to help you, a non-epidemiologist, understand well. I'm a graduate nursing student with undergraduate degrees in both biology and nursing, and never felt the need to write a textbook review before.

Easy to read
Easy to read and comprehend concepts and examples. Some examples are oversimplified, but that allows a gentle introduction to the topic and piques interest for further study. My course instructor jumps from sections of the book to other sections, yet the chapters are fairly self-contained and do not presuppose you have read an earlier section. The Kindle version is ok, but it does not support this jumping around so well. I would recommend this book for anyone wishing an introduction to epidemiology.

Great, Small Table Font
I am currently reading the book for an epi grad class. It has MANY examples that help illustrate points, which I need. Also, the questions at the end of the text help solidify the points, which I also need. What's disappointing is that I bought the e-book version and the tables and charts are often too small (font and all) for me to read. If this had been an actual book, I am sure it would have been printed in a reading-sized font. The one via Kindle is toooooo small and, thus, I miss much needed insight since lots of questions and examples refer to these tables and figures :(Kindle needs to review it's e-printing of this text, including offer ways of enlarging it. (I cannot enlarge it even via my computer's functions).

Great rental, great price
This book has literally come in handy with my epidemiology course in grad school. Super informative and definitely worth taking a read if you're bored, some interesting things to learn about. Obviously it's a rental so it'll be a little used and marked up, but nonetheless it's helped so so far in my first semester in grad school, would rent books from this company again.

Very clearly explained
If you are a public health or epidemiology student you should own this book. What sets it apart from similar textbooks is that it very thoroughly and clearly explain important concepts; nothing is just glossed over as in other textbooks. It does not go in to great depth some methods/tools used in clinical epidemiology such as inter-rater agreement, statistical models and other statistical methods etc., but I don't think it was part of the scope of the book. A truly excellent book you should buy.

Book came in good as described
Great condition as described by seller! Delievered on time. No problem. It’s thick but not so thick book. It’s hard for me to review about the contents though since I ended up dropping the class I needed this book for and so haven’t really read it much at all. Would just keep it for future reference or if I happen to need that class later on.

Well organized, logical progression, and strong examples.
The text is well-organized with logical progression and strong examples and graphs to illustrate explanations. I purchased Epidemiology by Leon Gordis for a graduate course in the fall and read it in advance over the summer. Unlike other texts, it is comprehensive and demands little else to supplement. One improvement I woukd suggest is inclusion of software examples for application to SPSS.

Solid Epidemiology textbook
I had this text used for a graduate level introduction to Epidemiology course. I thought it was easy to follow. And as a bonus, if you buy it new, you get access to an online copy that includes the ability to highlight the text and take notes, which made studying even easier for me.

The Epi Bible
"The Bible of Epi" says a friend who specializes in epidemiology! I read quite a bit of it, and it is easy enough to understand. Good examples, visual imagery, and descriptions.

a little less boring. This author has provided similar books or articles ...
A colorful book that makes Epidemiology and Study Design and Bias and Confounding ... a little less boring. This author has provided similar books or articles over several years, and his approach is sound - I am using it for continuous learning - keeping up a few pages at a time ... and then take a nap.

Accessible textbook with helpful graphics.
A really well written, accessible text with helpful graphics that entices interest in this complex subject and aid understanding. Times New Roman is the font used, which may not be ideal for those with dyslexia, but otherwise a really good textbook. The author has a good grasp of approaches that help students (and others) to learn.

Four Stars
Much easier to follow - with more detail, graphics, and examples - than Rothman's book.
