Squier Classic Vibe 50s Mustang Bass, Surf Green, Laurel Fingerboard

I’ve played bass professionally with Grammy winning artists, and this Squire mustang was the best purchase I’ve made this year. First it’s a beautiful instrument. Well constructed out the box. A new set of flatwounds and boom, dialing in that classic fender punchy tone with ease. I use it on my weekly reggae/ska gig and it’s perfect. Short scale is easy on the hands. Great for beginners. It’s a well built bass. Love the way the strings go through the body. And it’s true to the 60s original. I dial in my tone very easy. I can shift from reggae to ska punk. To more soul and funk stuff. Easy to travel with here in NY. Cabs and Ubers and on the trains are pretty easy. Thinking now about the tele bass!

I’ve had this bass for 2 months now and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. The quality of construction is impressive for such an inexpensive bass. I have owned other Squier basses and the Mustang is by far the best of the lot. The design is a very close match to the original 1964 model. The neck is extremely comfortable to play and the sting through body is an added bonus feature not often found on lower priced models such as Squiers. The pickup and tone controls are simple and straightforward making this bass easy to dial in a great tone. You can play anything on the Mustang and I find myself playing the Mustang more than my other (Leo designed) bass. The only thing I had to do was get it professionally set up, after that it was golden. At $399 it’s a steal and much better than the Mexican produced Mustang.I love playing this bass and highly recommend the Squier Classic vibe Mustang Bass.

I love it! I immediately put flatwounds on it, both for the sound and the string tension, and I couldn't be happier. I wanted a mellow, vintage sound, and I have received it. The stock roundwounds were a bit light, you may want to go up a gauge if using those; I got medium scale strings, I read that the string through body design warrants them. Minus one star for the very sharp fret ends, they'll need a filing (or maybe I'll leave them to enforce better technique!); but no other issues with the build, set-up, or electronics out of the box.

I've played a '68 Mustang since '72 and decided to try this Squire version. Plays great, sounds great and stays in tune much better than my old workhorse. Don't know if it will last 50 years but I'll be long gone by then. LOL

This is the second bass guitar I’ve ordered, after my first choice was shown as unavailable. Upon opening the guitar from its packaging, found 3 cracks in the body of the guitar. Will be returning to the issues and looking into a plan c.

I think that I had the expectation that if I was going to buy a fender guitar that cost several hundred dollars that it would be of moderately good quality. it turns out that there isn’t really anything that much different than a fender guitar and a squire guitar. The main difference is the kind of wood used and the styling. In my experience, the fretwork continues to be atrocious. Guitar always needs set up. And more than just a little.I do believe that things are improving in that area as most of the Chinese companies are paying attention to customer responses and are improving. The fret ends on their guitars to avoid returns. Fender has no such concerns since they are in a different price bracket.However, if I can get a $100 Chinese Guitar that feels better in my hands just as good or better than a $500 fender guitar, I’ll buy the Chinese guitar every day.Some people find it hard to accept that tone in Guitar is extremely subjective when determining if it’s good or not. Opinion is everything.So many people use reverb, distortion, overdrive, and other effects that will distort the sound of a guitar. Why spend so much money on a guitar when you’re just going to distort the sound anyway?

...that I upgraded to the one I really wanted, a Fender JMJ Mustang. However, the Squire was really great -- the one I received was flawless and totally playable out of the box. I found myself playing it every day with a fender rumble 40, also recommended. Love the way these Mustang basses look and as a guitar player I appreciate the short scale. The squire Mustang is a solid instrument that didn't feel at all cheap, like some other Squire guitars I've played.
