Can this be attached to roof rack instead of attaching it to the placeholder inside the car from windows?

Yes if course. We have Renault Triber and we used it attaching to roof rails which as per Renault have 50 kg luggage holding capacity. So you can as well, if roof rails are functional meant for holding luggage as well.
