A good read for PCP's looking for an overview of Functional Medicine
As a Family Physician interested in Functional Medicine (FM), I enjoyed this read for the purpose of expanding my knowledge about FM, and how FM training could enhance my primary care practice. The author provides an overview of her own background and entry into FM, followed by a very brief description of some basics of FM and how they pertain to everyday primary care.I subtracted a star because it failed to address my major concern with FM: its lack of evidence base. There were several instances in the book where basic lab interpretation information was incorrect / inconsistent with current guidelines. Additionally, many of the references cited do not really support the practice - i.e., a study showing association and making the leap to causation about various micronutrient deficiencies is not scientific. However, the vast majority of the recommendations in the book fell under the category of either good common-sense medicine (eat well, exercise, meditate, reduce stress and you will improve nearly any condition) or non-harmful supplements that do have some data behind them. So despite these concerns I had, I will be continuing my dive to further educate myself in this area, because I think it can only help my patients and increase my satisfaction with medical practice.

Outdated
Material sounds too similar to regular medical procedures and most of this material doesn't appear "functional" medicine. This material that is presented is outdated. Very disappointing.
