Great, comfortable tatami mat.BackgroundI had never used a tatami mat before except a couple nights in Japan so I was nervous if I can actually sleep in one comfortably on a daily basis. I wanted to save space and live more minimally. Well, I got this mat + a FULI futon. I find this to be surprisingly expensive, but it seems that every brand is.MattWhen I got the mat, it had a strong grass smell and I let it air out for several days. To this day there is still a grass smell but I don't mind it. The appearance seems good quality, well-put together with no loose threads. The color is mainly greenish with some more yellow around the edges. I heard they turn more from green to yellow over the years. It is lightweight and firm, and insulates well against the cold floor undernearth.SleepThe first night I was shocked at how comfortable it is to lie in it. If I didn't know I could mistake it for a bed, I thought it would be much more of a change. I slept very comfortably on my side/stomach. Btw, my FULI futon is slightly wider and shorter than this matt. not the end of the world. When I woke up, I felt a little different than usual, maybe very faintly sore - a sign of getting adjusted. The next few nights I continued my test and slept exactly as normal or better, with no soreness or other unusual effects.SummaryThe matt takes me about 1 minute 30 seconds to put away in the morning. I find this very satisfying compared to the heavy constraints that come with a huge immovable bed. It is easier for me to adjust my space, and I sleep very comfortably on it. If I had a full size I believe it would be great to sleep with a partner as well. Overall despite the high price I am very happy with my matt.

Very solid feel tatami mats. Except for it is light weight, it is like the actual tatami floors. It also has a strong rush grass smell upon opening. I’ve never used new tatami before and was really impressed by the natural fragrance. It smells like bamboo leaf when steamed and makes me think of yummy bamboo leaf rice balls！previously I saw some reviews about a strong chemical smell. I think that reviewer didn’t know it is actually the smell of the grass. It doesn’t smell like chemical at all. It is very natural. The very edges of the rush grass part are a little faded in color but most of it is fresh green color. It’s mostly quite perfect and I’m very happy with it for the price paid.

The smell is strong and lasts a long time, and is mildewy smelling.

Even happier with this than I thought I would be, for several reasons: it's more lightweight and sturdy than anticipated, it folds nicely for carrying, it has zippable carry-case, it has a wonderful (natural) smell, and the overall workmanship shows attention to detail. I found it comfortable to put under my sleeping bag and anticipate even more comfort when my shikibuton arrives. I might have paid and arm and a leg for a fancier one from another company, but I'm glad that I did not.

As can be seen in the photo I use these mats to sleep on with my shikifuton as well as sit on with my zabutons during the day. The mats are thinner than traditional flooring by maybe half an inch or so but that in no way takes away from the comfort of these babies. Also I should note they are waaaay thicker than most of the mats on amazon and out there in general. The smell and feel of the grass is awesome(personal taste ). Now I should note that the grass smell was stronger in the beginning and now you can only really get a good whiff if you put your nose right up to the mat. These mats have what feels like a foam interior so they are super light and a little springy when stepping on them. They fold up for portability and can be adjusted for size as need be. The underside has a grip that hugs the floor and prevents sliding amd moisture. For the price these are literally the best option of you want something thats comfortable, easily stored and moved and provides enough coverage that you can use it perfectly with a twin size shikifuton and kakebuton.

Easy to fold/carry around with. Highly recommend it for people who can't sleep on regular beds. I bring it with me to every Airbnb places places. I either put it on the bed or on the floor. super comfy. And the bottom is anti slippery so it stays on. The thickens is just perfect if you sleep on the floor. I rarely leave reviews but my mom and I really love this product. I will post photos later
