Not in the spirit of the writer.
It is a matter of personal taste in the end but our view was that this was poor movie not suited to children (let alone adults). Gimmickry all the way. ! wonder why Hollywood always ham up a good story like this? Much the same wasdone to Matilda (the movie). If you had the good fortune to see the play (of Matilda) in London, that gives a good idea of how to put these stories in a movie or on the stage.
