Terrific challenging builds
My overall rating for this wood "build it up yourself" safe is 5 stars, even though each of the three individual categories listed got a 4.It's not easy to build!, but that's good - it's not supposed to be. I do think the quality of the materials is good, consistent, and there are no booby traps involved with the build up, but it's not easy. It's a good gift, but only for the right person who enjoys some complex model building. It has been a great project for my 11 year old son. We have done 2 of these types of wood model builds. He did much more on his own with the second build and we both enjoyed the process.And... the built model is pretty solid, but I wouldn't give it 5 stars for sturdiness (maybe that is unfair of me, as it's as sturdy as you can expect a complex mechanical model to be).But back to the overall rating: oh, it's definitely a 5. Between the quality of the material, the overall well written instructions, and the enjoyment we've had building these types of models, I think it's a great item and I'd be glad to get another for my son to build.

Additional tool recommended
This is one of the better wooden models I've put together. It's very sturdy and the mechanics involved are really cool. People that are saying the combo doesn't work likely ran into what I did. You have to turn the second number more than you would think you do to engage the second wheel. It ends up being like 3 turns to set the second digit. Once I figured that trick out my kid was able to open it up. I do recommend a pair of needle nose pliers, an exacto knife, and a metal file to sand with. The last thing isn't needed, just makes it easier most of the time. Don't skimp on the wax either. I really enjoy putting this together with my son. Good bonding time and now he has a really cool piggy bank.

Great project! unfortunately not all pieces align when putting partial builds together.
This was a great project to build! I spent an hour here and there to put this together. The manual is pictures only, and pay attention (unlike me, at times), sometimes similar looking parts have a different place/ purpose! I've been able to correct such mistakes fairly easily though.Fortunately there was a board with spare parts, some of which I needed due to original parts breaking. Some parts don't lock together well and needed some 'encouragement'.Ultimately everything fit together nicely. However, the safe door lock never worked correctly after I put it together, even though I spent ample time lubricating every moving part. The door remains unlocked permanently.I will attempt my next 3D project with a different company.

This is amazing
Works like a real safe.Assembling with my son was very fun.The instructions are great.Takes some time to figure the coded part, there's a very good review here of someone who explained it very well if you can't figure it out.We already purchased another product from this company, excellent product as well.

Loved it, despite some issues!
I love gears, and safes; so when I saw this puzzle, I had to try it, and it did not disappoint!Others have pointed out that it isn't as good as ROKR or UGears, and that's true, but that doesn't mean it's a bad kit. I would recommend doing one of those first; my experience with previous puzzles helped me fill in some of the confusing bits.I would have preferred the ability to set my own combination, but I can imagine how that might complicate the model; this kit offers several options. When you get to that stage, understand the column marked PASS is the 3 digits in the combination; the other section (to the left) is for setting the parts that will yield that. I would have had the combination choices on the left & the settings on the right. Before you put the door onto the model, they recommend you test out the combination a few times. Do it! When they tell you to pass a digit so many turns, that means once the gears engage - free spinning doesn't count on this.If you find gears bind, it's usually because a part isn't seated properly. Slowly & gently find where the binding occurs, & check around for exactly what's keeping it. And remember - it's wood, so there will be some friction & resistance: turn gently but firmly, and don't force.Page 51 is the hardest step, because you're matching about 16 posts - I loved it, but I like a good challenge! Just know that it's coming, and be prepared. Finally, once you've got it all together & working, it's surprisingly sturdy! The only times I encountered problems that others had, I was able to fix them. (I did lubricate the locking bars, since someone had had a problem with the door. In fact, I had a problem as well with it being tight - turns out I just didn't seat some parts completely!)Oh, and they give you plenty of toothpicks! Plus, there is a video of someone assembling the kit. It isn't indexed, but if you're familiar with how YouTube works, you can find the part you need.Enjoy the challenge - it wasn't the most difficult thing I've built, but was still a very good ride!

Tumbler doesn't work
It was a great build for the most part!Unfortunately when it came to setting the locking mechanism, it did not work. I followed the instructions on the sheet, plus online and it never worked. Finally I looked at the reviews and discovered the MAJORITY of people couldn't make it work. Disappointing, but still a fun build (if you never close the door!)
