Misleading and careless illustrations
The math on the scanned page is correct, but the illustration misleads. No point of view or perspective explains why the right end view of the complete block should also be halved. It sorta looks like a cubical half pound of butter, cut into quarters with two vertical cuts ... and two of the resulting quarters have been discarded. The photo of the rusted junkyard Mercury on p. 96 does illustrate oxidation well ... but why flop it left to right? The steering wheel is on the sinister side. On p. 74 it says, "Because carbon dioxide is less soluble in warm water, a cold carbonated beverage is more bubbly than a warm one." I believe it means to say, "Because carbon dioxide is less soluble in warm water, a cold carbonated beverage will hold more carbon dioxide than it will when it warms." Perhaps it should continue that, "As it warms, the carbon dioxide will leave the solution and come up to the surface as bubbles. There is a neat trick played in the photograph. . . . The ice is pictured sunk to the bottom of the glass. That can happen if the ice is frozen solid to the bottom of the glass before adding the carbonated drink.
