A Fantastic, Fun-Filled Adventure – My Son Loves It!
We recently purchased Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas for my son, who is an avid fan of both the Dog Man series and Captain Underpants. As expected, this book did not disappoint! From the moment he started reading, he was hooked, and I could see the excitement in his eyes as he flipped through the pages.Engaging and Hilarious StorytellingDav Pilkey has a magical way of capturing kids' attention with his unique blend of humor, action, and heartwarming moments. The story follows Dog Man and his friends as they take on a new adventure filled with unexpected twists, quirky villains, and, of course, tons of laugh-out-loud moments. Pilkey’s ability to write in a way that is both silly and meaningful is truly impressive. The themes of friendship, teamwork, and doing what’s right are woven seamlessly into the fun-filled plot.Captivating Illustrations and CreativityOne of the things that makes Dog Man books stand out is the comic-style artwork, which keeps young readers engaged. The vibrant illustrations are simple yet expressive, making it easy for kids to follow the action-packed story. The mix of text and images makes this a perfect book for reluctant readers—my son normally prefers watching cartoons, but this book keeps him reading!Great for All AgesAlthough Dog Man is targeted towards kids ages 7-12, I have to admit that I found myself chuckling at some of the jokes! The humor is cleverly written so that both children and parents can enjoy it. My son, who is 8, couldn’t put it down, and he finished it in just a couple of days. He keeps rereading his favorite parts and even tries to copy the drawings in his sketchbook.Encourages a Love for ReadingOne of the best things about this book is that it keeps kids motivated to read. If your child is struggling to find books they enjoy, this series is a game-changer! It’s engaging, funny, and fast-paced—everything a young reader could want. After finishing Lord of the Fleas, my son immediately asked for the next book in the series, which is a great sign that he’s truly enjoying reading.Final Thoughts – A Must-Buy!If you’re looking for a fun, engaging, and entertaining book that will get your kids excited about reading, Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas is a fantastic choice. It’s packed with adventure, humor, and heart, making it perfect for young readers and even parents who want to share a good laugh with their kids. My son loves it, and I highly recommend it for any child who enjoys comics, action-packed stories, or just a good dose of silliness!

Basically Review-Proof, But That Certainly Shouldn't Stop You
The "Dogman" comic books are supposedly written by Harold and George, who are themselves the main characters in Dave Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" series of graphic novels. So we already have a weird sort of meta issue going on before we even start reading. Here's the thing. I read and review lots of children's books, because I like and admire them, and I often find them better written and more interesting, (from a lot of perspectives), than adult literary works. (I'll take Daniel Pinkwater over Ian McEwan any day of the week.) But these Pilkey books resist being reviewed or described. They are antic and often very silly, even cartoonish. They also touch on deeper themes that are often overlooked in children's lit. Admirably, they are scalable, in the sense that there are jokes and delights for the youngest readers and yet also sly and deadpan humor for older readers. (A robot in this book has "Grape Nuts & Bolts" for breakfast. That's a sneaky funny throwaway for older readers, I would think. The subtitle for this book is a joke on "Lord of the Flies", which older readers will/might get and yet which won't derail younger readers.)But here's the main takeaway. Every one of my grandsons has a couple of "Underpants" books and some "Dogman" books. They pick them up at school book sales, the library, on bookstore trips, or they trade with friends. The books are on the family room floor, in the bathrooms, in their backpacks, on their desks, and on the floor of the van. This one I got for one grandson because it was the latest and he just couldn't wait for his turn at the library. Something is going on here.Bottom line? -- Since the books are funny, good humored, naughty in only the mildest of ways, and erratically independent, and since the kids love them wholeheartedly, I say "you bet!".
