Q: What is the origin of the gelatin?

My package that arrived today explicitly states PORK gelatin and artificial color (ammonia caramel)

Q: How do these compair to the Double Salt licorice? More or less salty?

Definitely less salty than double salt.

Q: The first had a lot of ammonia taste. Since then I don't taste ammonia. Does a person need to open the bag and let it air out before eating it?

It's definitely the ammonium. Years ago I bought Danish hard licorice, in a can, in a duty free store in Frankfurt Airport. They were too ammoniacal for my my taste. But Dutch salmiak rondos, which I've bought in bulk candy stores in Germany -- they are little balls with a someone crisp salty exterior and soft, sweet interior -- are more to my taste.

Q: How many pieces in a 1 pound bag? Need to know for an event we are planning.

obviously you have to like salty licorice, this is not a mild "American licorice", but an European salty licorice, and it is absolutely delicious! 130-135 pieces in a 1 lb bag.
