Yeah, many people get confused because these connectors have the pins so they think they are the "male" but these are indeed the female connectors as the other side goes inside this one. So if you want the ones with the pins then yes you do want to the female as this is the correct gender.Unfortunately there is no standard for polarity on JST connectors. These happen to be the wrong polarity to match the equipment I have but that is the nature of JST connectors/wiring. I am just removing the wires and swapping them to make the polarity match what I need. If the polarity doesn't match your needs you can either find other other ones to buy or you buy these, take a fine pointy object, and carefully insert it under the little tab that holds each wire in. Carefully insert and lift slightly and you can pull the pin out of the connector. Do this to both wires then swap and reinsert. Polarity mismatch resolved.

Usually the connection pins and sockets determine gender. These "female" connectors havevl thevl two pins in them but the white fits inside the board side connector. I had to reorder the "male" version to get the half with female pin receivers. It would have helped if there was even one photo showing the inside of the connector - I would have seen the two pins and known I had the wrong item.

The polarity is reversed on these connectors! I should charge you for damaging my gear! Upgraded? untrue. These connectors are inferior, bottom of the barrel junk... dangerous and deceptive. but it's my fault for not checking... CHEAP TRASH FROM CHINA!

As expected, the adapter was not the right one for the drone I wanted to swap it out with. The quality looks and feels great!! Just be ready to return it because it is a very specific adapter. Research codes and what they mean on batteries and wires to prevent needless hassle as I have learned.
