Delightful!
Useful, easy-to-follow and ultimately delightful book from one of my favorite art instructors. The step-by-step tutorials are simple yet comprehensive. And the author gives tips for interpreting and executing the artwork in unexpected ways. Buy with confidence - you won't be disappointed. And consider following Amaryllis Henderson on Skillshare as well. She has published many wonderful classes.

Delightful and useful!
I like this even more than I liked the author’s Expressive Little Faces. She did an excellent job breaking down *how* to break down animals into their basic shapes and *how* to go from there to create expressive animals that look proportional or cutely unproportional.

Fun step by step
Let's face it -animals are hard to draw! People wanting to draw and paint nice looking animals will find Amarilys Henderson's book really useful. It may still be a bit hard, especially for the absolute beginner, but I always believe that, as with anything, practice makes perfect.I liked that the step-by-step drawings use a different color for each subsequent step so that you don't have to figure out what are the new steps. Every step-by-step drawing book should do that! I loved the style twists such as the flower wreaths and letterings in animal silhouettes. Those are fun!As a visual person, I find that painting lessons are better in video formats so I always want to suggest that online access to videos be available, though I'm aware that it would make the book too costly. The step-by-step instructions and paintings are adequate in this book.I was surprised to see that the colors listed in each painting are Dr Ph. Martins Concentrated Watercolors but I suppose you could use any brand of watercolors especially if you use different colors to express the emotion and expression of the animals as suggested by the author.I enjoy the author's style a lot and look forward to her next publication!

Cute Book
This is a cute book. It shows how to not only draw the animals, but how to paint them, too. The directions are simple. They're detailed enough to get a nice final product, but as always, it'll take lots of practice. There's also lots of advice and tips throughout. There are colorful illustrations throughout, too, both as a final product and with the instructions for painting. It's a handy resource for those wanting to draw cute animals.

Fun for the adults and the kids
I am learning a lot from Amarilys Henderson's "Drawing and Painting Expressive Little Animals: Simple Techniques for Creating Animals with Personality". I got it with the idea that it could be an activity for the children in the family. It does work in that capacity as it is fun and informative and they're happy with the results.I am happy with the selection because I am learning so much as well. Not just about drawing animals and expression, but also more about color. I am so color-challenged that I tend to stick with either primary colors or neutrals if neutrals stay in the range of oatmeal. This book helped me get a better idea of using colors. It is fun and informative for the kids and for the adults who are interested.

preteen daughter loves this book
This is a great book to learn from. It starts off with an overview of art supplies, specifically watercolors, gouache and acrylic paints. And gives some brief descriptive information about different animals (who has why kind of tail, etc). Then it dives into teaching by page 20 - teaching how to draw different types of eyes, fur, noses, etc. And how to get a few different expressions.Page 30 starts the full animal drawing tutorials. This isn't like a "how to draw" book that would give you two pages of step by step to drawing a horse with a cute expression and that's it. Instead there are sections for different styles of animals. In each section there are 10 pages on how to create that specific style of animal. A few pages are step-by step drawings. But a few pages are how to paint it. Or how to add color, or add a fantasy twist, creative flare or new technique to the basic animal shape. There are 10 page sections for each of the following groups:- long & strong animals (horse, zebra, deer)- cute little animals (hedgehogs, rabbits, chipmunks)- wildly unique animals (camels, giraffes, rhinos)- birds (cardinal, toucan, humming bird)- wild cats (cheetah, lion, tiger)- cold blooded animals (chameleon, snake, tree frog)- Asian (panda, monkey, red panda)- barnyard animals (rooster, cow, pig)- surfers & swimmers (dolphin, sea turtle, shark)- Aussies (koala, kangaroo, crocodile)Then sprinkled throughout are lots of ideas of new ways to create animals - making cutouts, using shapes, painting patterns, making silhouettes, etc.Overall, it's a fun book to not just flip through and figure out what you want to draw, but also to actually read and learn from. It's filled with knowledge but also inspiration.

Good book, but does not include cats or dogs
This book, Drawing and Painting Expressive Little Animals, by Amarilys Henderson, was available to me through the Amazon Vine program. I ordered it for my young adult daughter who enjoys drawing and has recently taken up painting. She loves to draw animals, especially cats. This book shows step-by-step techniques for both drawing and painting animals. A wide variety of animals are covered, including many wild animals, farm animals, cold blooded creatures and more. However, two animals that did not have tutorials are cats and dogs. A few of their features are included, such as paws, but not the whole animals. They are such popular animals that I am surprised they were omitted from this collection. See “attached” photo of index. Other than that, we really like the book.

Beautiful book for any skill level!
This book is a gem for anyone wanting to learn to draw or paint animals better! Steps for completing each animal are very clear with written instructions as well as drawings to follow for each step. Between the covers of this book, you will find domestic animals, wild animals, exotic animals, and even birds. I loved the focus sections on eyes and expressions - super helpful!
