If the cans are empty this should work fine. how many pounds can it pick up?

Right now, not much. It does have a wide grabber area. It would probably work well for jars and things. I need to use it mainly to pick up things that I dropped. Like paper so I don't have to bend over to get it and until I glue some type of foam on the end, it's not very good at it.

does this come with a clip to attach it to a walker?

No it does not. Handle has a round hole maybe you could attach a clip to it. Very handy tool.

Can I buy replacements for the gold plastic piece at the pick-up end? I ordered 3 of these and all three plastic pieces are gone.

I cut a piece of wood the same size and shape of the plastic piece and hold it in place with rubber bands... the last pick-up I ordered didn't even closeall the way! it wouldn't pick up the morning newspaper.. their quality is very bad..
