An Important Look at American Exceptionalism
Not exactly sure why the other reviews are so low and somewhat harsh. Stephanson writes a scholarly and detailed look at the backstory and subsequent growth of American exceptionalism through the lens of religious and economic fervor, all under the rabid umbrella of Manifest Destiny. A really good read.

Good factual narrative
Follows a familiar "historical formula" to provide a factual understanding of events that lead us to where we are today. The author under-emphasized (in my view) the "Raison D'etre" of that driving.. albeit unifying.. influence that lead to our "manifest destiny" i.e. Calvinism... which was and still is the basis of America's "civil religion." In that regard, we still collectively embrace a belief that we implement "God's will" in all we do. The author seemed to mimic the underlying ethos Ken Burns employs in his epic productions of American history: "political correctness." Having said that, I still think this is a good synopsis of what manifest destiny was as a "tenet of the faith" in America's devotion to itself that still resonates among politicians in debating legislation or foreign diplomacy.

Worth the glance not worth the read.
This book was overly researched and underwritten. The author was heavy-handed with his religious references and did not handle politics, social issues, or economics in any significant way.
