What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.) Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell Songs: Mrs. Robinson, Homeward Bound, America, Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Scarborough Fair, April Come She Will, Wake Up Little Susie, Still Crazy After All These Years, American Tune, Late in the Evening, Slip Sliding Away, A Heart in New York, Kodachrome, Maybellene, Bridge Over Troubled Water, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, The Boxer, Old Friends/Bookends, Feelin' Groovy, The Sound of Silence, Late in the Evening (reprise)

Excellent quality recording!
My whole family watched this within days of my husband receiving it as a gift for his birthday. It is a high quality recording of this epic concert in Central Park, years ago. I highly recommend it! And the vocals and instrumentation of the concert are, of course, spot-on. Phenomenal musicians, singers, and songwriters!

A historical event that was also a concert
I was in elementary school when this concert occurred. They were one of the top groups of their generation. I still love to listen to their music !

The Concert of a Lifetime
I am a boomer who has an appreciation for music of all kinds. I have watched more than my share of concerts but aside from the excitement of the live Beatles in 1965, this is at the top of perfect performances. I never tired of viewing it. The harmony, honesty, simplicity, perfectionism, and sense of collective Americana of a time and place has never been rematched. My heart opens, breaks, and rejoices but never is distracted. You can't help but be transformed.

Excellent concert by immature artists
I listened to Simon & Garfunkel's music growing up in the seventies, but saw this concert on PBS, and bought both their Greatest Hits and Concert CDs afterwards. The DVD is enjoyable to watch, although I notice they took out the song where some nut charges Paul Simon during one of his solo songs, which wasn't a loss anyway (I speak of that song in the DVD). The song list is excellent, the performance as a whole is enjoyable to watch, and both of their voices are spectacular, to say the least. The only really jarring note is their lack of maturity as demonstrated by their on stage behavior. I am not one of those who seem to feel that the artistic temperament or the pop psychology self justification argument justifies such childish and unprofessional behavior, and it was a relief to see that they behaved in a much more mature fashion on their Old Friends tour and DVD. Which DVD/show is better is a subjective judgement, but this is an excellent show and this DVD is worth the price.

Audio NOT synced with video, hence only 3 stars
The video of this 1981 concert is great. Unfortunately, the audio is NOT synced up with the video, making it VERY DISTRACTING to watch. The audio lags, bummer. So, if you want to see Art and Paul in this concert, a few months before they turned 40, 11 years after they split, still singing lovely 2 part harmony, and don’t mind audio lag, then go for it.I’m keeping this DVD for the visuals, excitement of the crowd, Art’s body moves, and Art’s moving performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water., song solo as Paul had originally wanted him to.
