Q: Are these spools that will fit on a regular sewing machine or are these cones?

they will fit a regular sewing machine. However, one of the spools had the thread coming out of two places in the middle of the top - no way to start using it.

Q: Where does the thread start pulling from?

The thread starts under the bottom orange piece. Gently twist the bottom piece off and you will see the end of the thread.
