It appears that the front vestibule must be pitched in order to use the rain fly. Is this correct?

Yes, the front vestibule has it own pole to pitch it. The tent has two poles and the vestibule has one. I can’t see using it without pitching the vestibule, there would be too. Much material left flopping itpf you just tried to use the rain fly over the tent. The vestibule is huge and a great feature of the tent.

Is this North Face Wawona 6 considered a 2, 3, or 4 season tent?

It is best described as a 3-season tent. It has good ventilation for spring-summer-fall, but it does not have the structural capabilities to withstand snowfall.

I don’t remember exactly but I did specifically order the gray one so there must be a way to choose

Is there a functional back door to come in and out of?

There is just one door and one vestibule.
