Kitten's First Full Moon Board Book: A Caldecott Award Winner

The story is adorable and the illustrations are cute as a button. One star off though because the board book pages are very flimsy and bendable. Our baby has only handled it two or three times and there are already bent pages. None of her other board books are as thin and as such this book feels cheaper. Kind of defeats the purpose of buying a board book.

This is my daughter's favorite book. At 8 months old my daughter's three most favorite things were kitty, milky and the moon-- so this book was an instant hit. I worried that black and white would be boring for her, but the illustrations are so beautiful and full of contrast our entire family loves to read it and look at it, day after day. The book is an adventure type, so reading it is never dull. She is 23 months now and remembers the words in the book and acts out each scene. Super cute!As an additional bonus, this book helped me wean her at 21 months. Prior to weaning, this has been a book that was read prior to her passionate and highly anticipated -- evening mama milky sessions. Kitty is her hero, so realization that he/she is drinking from the bowl, has drastically changed her motivation. She went from wanting, what was familiar to wanting what was cool. After attempting to drink from the soup bowl she moved on to the very tall bowl --cup. Highly recommended and surprised this book doesn't have 400 or more five star reviews.

Why would a greyscale kitty book be awesome?First, Even on the cover you can see the heavy line weights and contrast. This book can be read by nightlight! Ours was the squishy bluebird light you may have seen around.Second, It has great hooks. Flip through the sample pages Kitten, moon, wanted it, yeah yeah, stretched, licked..A BUG on her TONGUE!!! The child is now a mass of giggles and thoroughly hooked...and if not, the next vignette will do the trick. It's a kitty book...but bugs and bruises hook the boys too!Third, the story is simple, but adds a new adventure every three pages to maintain attenionFourth, at the same time it has a repetitive element (kids like that) (and that's THEIR line to "read") and slows the pacing until...Kitten ...is home ...and fed...and asleep.And so is your kid! And It didn't take Samuel L Jackson!

This book is great. I first bought it in 2017 for my own daughter and recently as a gift for a new baby. The 2017 board book is of better quality (thicker boards) and has held up really well. The 2020 purchase is much thinner and you can bend the boards. Since it is going with a baby shower gift, I know it will last for a few years, but I expect the 2017 book to last longer than the one just purchased. BUT - but... this is a great story and very cute for all genders.

I go every week to a pre-school and read various books to a classroom of around 20 children through an organization called Ready Readers. I am always looking for interesting books to read to the class. I also love kitties so I try to find positive and sweet books about kitties and this is definitely one. First, the children were so impressed that it was an award winner because they had just been talking about that in class regarding other books that had awards. I always ask them by the pictures and where we are in the book if they can guess what is going to happen. That made them so interested in what the kitten was going through and what experiences it was having. Even the teachers really loved it and said that was one of the best books so far. I recommend this book highly for pre-school age children.

Small kids will be mildly anxious then relieved that the kitten gets his bowl of milk in the end. For the very young, the book is printed on heavy, layered cardstock, more than an 1/8 inch thick for each page, so read it every night, it will last through several siblingsThe prose is very simple and short with repetitions to help beginning readers to easily associate sounds to word shape as well as encouraging the narrator to use a sing song voice. Studies show that babies learn language faster when spoken to in simplified "baby talk" so a nightly story as simple as this one is a great book for 1-2 year old while older siblings may learn what the word "milk" looks like.It is black and white throughout, just like our vision at night but the drawings were detailed enough to still be interesting. Somehow, without the stimulation of bright colors, the book seems even more restful, making it an excellent bedtime wind-down.

I love this book! I bought this book a number of years ago walking though a bookstore and the illustrations grabbed me immediately. I am a cat lover and thought the story was so sweet. I bought it long before I had a child and it sat waiting on my shelf. Many years later, I now have a little boy who just turned 5 and loves this book. It is not easy to find cat books that are sweet and not overly girly. This book is perfect for my little boy and on the top of his bedtime request list.

A friend had recommended this book to me, and I wish I had gotten it sooner! My toddler loves pointing out the moon and mimicking the kitty being sad after jumping in the pond. She has asked for it every night for nearly 3 months, now. I have memorized it now, though my toddler will sometimes "read" it to me herself in baby-babble, mimicking the gestures and tones I use.The black and white images are great visual contrast for even newborns to look at.

I love it and my baby too

I bought this book at my sons request for Christmas. Every time we went to the library he wanted to keep the book out and wanted to hear the story every night. Of course when Santa got back to me and told me it was out of print the only thing I could do was to buy a pre loved one from the Amazon market. This book is a firm favorite.

I started reading this book to my son at 2.5 months and he goes WILD when he sees the images and print. and it's such a sweet story!

Book arrived with a yellow mark on one of the pages. Incredibly disappointed as this was as adorable book but clearly used.

Not only are the pictures lovely but the layout and story are superb for little ones. I fully recommend this item, it's a very good buy. We got it for our baby and it's been a success.
