Very informative book, beautifully produced, full of information
This book was a present for my daughters, who both love, and have, dogs. I did peruse the contents and read about the particular and very affectionate dogs they love, and learned a lot, and found myself browsing through the frankly enormous variety of hogs now available. I came to the conclusion that possessing this book is rather preferable to actually owning a panting dog of any sort. This quality hardback is full of ideal, well-bred examples of beautifully photographed and well-captioned canines; there are articles on how to break in a new puppy and what to expect, the dogs' plus and minus points, what they're good or bad for, such as working, home-life, farms, families, scrapyard guarding and so forth. Some dogs are elegant from every angle, some are rather ridiculous, some ugly, some brutish, some friendly and harmless, but then as you may have noticed, people like dogs that reflect themselves in some way. There is no mention, naturally enough, of the 'plastic bag routine', which task alone would deter me from doggy delights, but when one considers a dog's perfume, inappropriate though relentless sniffing, scratching and undignified behaviour, furniture chewing, frequent bodily functions, endless demands to play or be taken for walks, medicinal requirements, vaccinations, vet's bills, eventual weakening of faculties, approaching demise, dreaded last woof, owner's grief, misery, dereliction of duty, the taking to drink, dark thoughts of joining the old hound ..... and then months later the slowly awakening desire for a new one – well this is where this beautifully produced book comes into its own as a life-saver. Arf, he said.

Beautiful book but with some mistakes
This is a beautiful book with great pictures and useful information on a huge number of breeds. I bought this for my 7 year old daughter, as the short headlines and visual "scores" on key characteristics for each breed are easy for her to read. However, I did notice a few mistakes:The Dobermann is in the scent hound section, but should be in the working dog section.I think the picture used for the Greyhound is actually a Galgo (look at the long tail!).The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the King Charles Spaniel score 1/3 on child friendliness, but they should score 3/3. The text even mentions they love children, and are perfect family pets.
