A wonderful engaging novel
So well written and moving, with a mixture of humour and realism. The characters are very well drawn and the story completely believable.

Finally...Black soldiers involvement in WW2 recognised.
I loved the magic in this book...The complex camaraderie between the black soldiers, the difficulties they experienced with sometimes inferior white superiors against the background of exported American racism, the beauty of the Italian Alps, the heroism of ordinary Italian people and of extraordinary partisan guerilla resistance. The magic of love against the senselessness of war.Loved The Colour of Water. Will read everything James Mcbride writes.

That was really good!
I was not sure that I could enjoy a book which featured war but I REALLY enjoyed this book. I read some of the reviews before purchasing and unlike some reviewers, I liked the beginning, the middle and the end. Call me simple...Mcbride’s characters won’t all necessarily have a happy ending .....I won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil it for others who may read. His characters however came to life and for that...it was a good read for me.If you like the Good Lord Bird...another of Mcbrides books....you’ll like this!

great read
A terrific story, cleverly plotted, beautifully written, and handling a notorious wartime massacre with intelligence and sensitivity. Not just a book for male readers.

A Tender Experience
This is a tender and emotional tale of survival of the heart and soul in the harsh reality of war. The hero manages successfully to overcome his thoughts of the recklessness of war by falling in love with the hostile environment in which he is placed. This is a truly touching book for those who can share our hero's experiences from true life.

A reasonable story that gets a little lost
I read this wanting to know more about what happened at St Anna Stazzema, this isn't the book but it does weave a reasonable story around the event but like a previous reviewer I thought it got lost in the middle. I'm not a reader of stories about battles and making war, rather the human stories that surround it, for me it was the interweaving stories about what was going on back in camp that lost it for me. If however you like novels about battles you would probably rate it higher than I did.

A reasonable story, but not strong
Like most people who may read this book, I picked it up on the strength of his Color of Water book, which was thoroughly excellent. The is a very different book. The story itself has a great deal of potential, but I felt it lost its way somewhere in the middle. The characters are somewhat muddled and don't develop the level of complexity I had hoped. And, I had the nagging feeling I was reading a follow up to Captain Corelli (which for me isn't a compliment by any means!). However, unlike Captain Corelli I did make it all the way through this book without actually cursing author. It's reasonable read, but it'll leave you thinking it could have been better.jwk

Powerful
A powerful account of the pain of war, love, racism and miracles. Set in WW2, Italy, where four heroes emerge. One of the best books I have read.

Beautiful, though not historically acutate
A lovely story centered around the 92nd Division of African American WWII soldiers, and the massacre at Sant'Anna di Stazzema
