Schaum's Outline of Programming with C (SCHAUMS' COMPUTING)

A Good Introduction to C
This remains one of the finest introductions to C, a book which gets you going. This is the book with which I started learning C.In later years, I did find the (very readable) "C Primer' by Les Hancock and Morris Krieger a great introduction to C but it certainly does not help one significantly in starting to program in C; I prefer it as a valuable aid in conceptual understanding, though. "C Programming - A Modern Approach" by K.N.King is an excellent book on either count but is terribly expensive. There is what the publisher calls "Indian adaptations" (a phrase I do not quite make any sense of) of this book. After all, there is no Indian flavour or version of C; nor are the needs of any Indian students any different from those elsewhere - and the Indian students are not really any different from any others. I wonder why this publisher keeps coming up with Indian adaptations of quite a few of their books!I do not know - and do not want to know - how the 'Indian adaptation' of the book differs from the original version; I just dismiss these adaptations as some kind of marketing gimmick with cosmetic changes of no consequence to a serious student.Given my distaste for that quaint phrase "Indian adaptation" (or the like), I keep away from those adaptations. I stick to the original version(s) by Byron Gottfried and suggest the same to others.

Print quality issue.
BHGDear Sir or Madam,While the content of this book is second to none, yet the print quality of it is unacceptable. For example in the code segments the lowercase ‘c’ is unreadable due to soaked ink into the paper.Best regards, AMRAM.

Good book for beginner
This book provides fundamental knowledge that fulfill my programming skills a lot. It also provides good examples as well as explanations for each exercise.

I particularly like this treatment because of the many opportunities for programming ...
This book is right up there with Waite's "New C Primer Plus", 2nd edition, for learning C as a self-study source. This Schaum's outline is especially clear and doesn't try to cram too much information in one chapter.I particularly like this treatment because of the many opportunities for programming (in order to learn how to program you have to write code on your own). This book provides such exercises that have a strong math emphasis, an area in which I'm interested. The only reason I didn't give it the full 5-stars is that it doesn't conform fully to the ANSI standards, in particular as it relates to functions and storage classes and how they're treated. Waite's book, which was actually written before this one, does point out such differences. There are a couple of other ANSI standard differences not addressed in Gottfried's book as well, but those shortcomings are miniscule compared to the clear explanations, along with the wealth of problems and programming opportunities I mentioned above. I've seen a lot of C textbooks, and this one is tied for #1 in my view.
