Can i use this to raise monarch caterpillars?

This kit is specific to Painted Ladies. You could re-use the net cage later for Monarchs if you want, but this complete kit is not for Monarchs.

How many caterpillers can you have in the 3 foot mesh carrier?

I had all of them in there. I believe I ordered 2 or 3 containers. They did totally fine.

does it come with food

The jars have food for the caterpillars, the caterpillars come shipped in the jars. You will need some oranges, banana and/or watermelon to feed the butterflies with in the large butterfly container. It does come with instructions on how to make the liquid butterfly food as well as packet of sugar and butterfly feeder.

am buying as a gift. Will this need to be opened immediately and tended to or will I be able to wait a week or so and give as birthday gift unopened?

Caterpillars are growing when you get the package. If you wait a week, they will have developed for a whole week and the recipient will miss those days. This is a gift you want to give upon arrival.
