Q: Not opened yet but due to a change of mattress plans, the mattress will only be 20cm deep and I ordered the 40cm deep cover. Any idea if it will fit?

I have a 10 inch mattress, so that is 25cm and I have 20cm and 40cm and both fit the mattress just fine, so you should be ok.

Q: Does this make the mattress more comfortable with padding, or is it purely for protection?

Personally, I find that it makes the mattress a little bit softer and helps you with a good night sleep and also it helps by throwing your own heat back at you
