Writing Prompts for Kids: A Creative Writing Workbook To Inspire Young Writers

A fun way to inspire your child!
Our eight year old has a very vivid imagination and loves to tell stories and imagine scenarios for her dolls and stuffed animals. But she occasionally has trouble getting started...Sheryl Green's new book offers a solution to that challenge, as well as a fantastic way to inspire your child and spark their imagination. Through a series of writing prompts and story ideas, the book offers kids a kick-start to get their minds traveling down different paths. From scary to sweet to silly, there is something for everyone here. The prompts are offered in divided chapters that also offer suggestions on the writing process and creativity in children, making the book a great collaborative effort for adults and children. There were some typos in the narrative sections of the book, which I admittedly found a bit distracting in a book about writing, but overall out was a fun way to get our girl thinking about different types of stories and introduce new topics for her writing. Thanks to the author for my obligation-free review copy.

If you are a Language Arts teacher who is interested in getting your students to write then this is the book for you.Chapter 1 gets you right into the writing. The author of this book gives ten writing prompts and then does something wonderful. She asks two or three questions about the prompt to help move the writer forward. That is one thing my students often struggle with. They choose a prompt but don’t know how to move forward.Chapter two deals with moving forward when you get writer’s block. She offers a lot of hints and tips to help you with this problem. Then you get ten more writing prompts.Chapter three dealt with the elements of a story. You know what I am talking about. You create a world, and then populate that world with characters you have created. Then you are given more tips and finally ten more writing prompts.Chapter four is where the real work begins. You’ve written a story and this chapter teaches you how to make it better through editing and revision. This of course is followed by more tips and then ten more prompts. This book is beneficial for children and adults alike. I can see me using this in my classroom at school. I highly recommend this book

40 TOPICS PLUS QUESTIONS PLUS PAGE NUMBERS!
As a Language Arts tutor, I am constantly on the lookout for books offering writing topics for my students. "Once Upon A Time" by Sheryl Green has over 40 story starters to choose from for my elementary and middle school students. I especially like that each topic includes a detailed story starter PLUS additional questions throughout the journal page to help young writers add details to their creative essays. ( see pics)In addition, the journal style book has a TABLE OF CONTENTS AND PAGE NUMBERS ON THE PAGES-YEAH!!This may not seem like a big deal but most journal-style books do not have these features. And if you are a tutor, teacher, or homeschooling parent who is trying to write curriculum, assign topics, and keep track of which topics are assigned to which students, page numbers and a Table of Contents are essential! The chapters in between the story starters include great tips, techniques, and exercises to help young readers fire up their imagination, create an engaging storyline, and add interesting details about their characters.I was given a free copy of "Once Upon A Time" by the author to review. But in all honesty, I would have bought this book without any hesitation ! I highly recommend "Once Upon A Time" by Sheryl Green to young writers, students, teachers and parents!

This is an excellent and easy way to encourage creative thinking!
I received an electronic version of this in exchange for my honest review.I have three kids I was able to practice this books' methodology on, and it was actually pretty encouraging to see the 17 year old journal ideas from these brief prompts. My 12 year old actually struggles with ideas to write about, so this was PERFECT to make him "think" and create a story line. It's extremely easy to utilize, and if you were to later help edit their work you can take it further than just "creative writing". It can be used to develop spelling and grammar if there is a review done in a one-on-one. Probably best for homeschooling or tutors if used in that way, but I did see that as a possibility.I was thankful I got to try this, it helped encourage the non-imaginative child who happens to be in the age group this is targeted at. Please check out the samples and see for yourself how EASY it is to implement!

Good for kids to stretch their storytelling using prompts
(I received an ARC for an objective review.)My boy had a lot fun doing these so far. We have been doing a handful a week so we aren't finished yet but it is definitely better and more polished in my mind's eye than the author's previous books. My boy and I play a bit of No Thank you Evil! a child rpg that encourages storytelling and inventing a fantastical character to run through adventures with a parent as a guide. With this I just let him run with it so he likes the freedom to try out the various bits and see what happens. He has a big vocabulary but his spelling isn't so great so reading his stories is a bit like reading Old English poetry. If you have a budding storyteller on your hands this is worth it.

Some good strategies to overcome writer's block
It's an interesting book and has some great writing prompts. My kid would recommend this to anyone who is young, still learning on how to write, has trouble identifying the topic of their story ans similar challenges. Also, it helps to think about the places, where one can research to get good material on the topic/story. My 10yr old thinks that this book gave her some of the new strategies to overcome writer's block.
