Matrix Brass Off Color Depositing Blue Hair Mask - Neutralizes and Tones Brassy or Orange Hair, For Color-Treated, Lightened Brunettes or Dark Blondes

True blue. Actually works. Less drying than the shampoo.
Out of all the brass fighting shampoos & conditioners I've tried, this is still the best product I've found as far as actually producing results, not causing damage to my hair, and allowing for control of how much color is deposited and where. It's particularly great for those with damaged and/or very dry hair. The color is actually blue (not dark violet or purple). So it's truly meant to neutralize orange and copper tones. I've taken my naturally dark (level 2-3) hair to a level 9 blonde and every shade of blonde to light brown in between. Each time, I wanted to maintain as neutral or cool/ashiness of a color as possible.I made the mistake of using this on my hair when it was too light (slightly lighter than or at a level 7). I wanted to neutralize "yellow-orange" tones (more yellow than orange), but this was a bit too blue for the job. This hair mask did its job, but some of my hair was left with a murky green tone that was really noticeable under natural sunlight.I would say this is safe to use on hair that is level 6 or darker. Be careful with level 7 hair. This is probably "too blue" for any color lighter than a level 7.I found that the shampoo (made by the same brand) works better, but it's also very drying. That's why I ended up trying this hair mask. My hair was so bleach damaged that parts of it would not even hold dye anymore, yet it seemed to stain very quickly from the blue pigment in the shampoo. (I wrote a review on the blue shampoo explaining how I worked around that issue.) It also left my hair so dry that I had to find ultra conditioning masks to use right after.I prefer this blue hair mask because it allows me to use a gentle shampoo for cleansing, and I have more control over how it's applied. This is especially helpful when my hair is dyed with an ombre/melt like effect. I can easily wash my hair, wring out excess water, pat it dry as much as possible, then comb this mask where I want it applied. For the lighter parts of my hair, I can do several things: dilute this mask with conditioner, rinse it off earlier than the darker part of my hair, mix this hair mask with a purple conditioner, just use a purple conditioner alone, etc. There's so much more control when applying this hair mask than when using any kind of color depositing/correcting shampoo.Even though the shampoo is stronger, this mask can work just as well. I just tend to leave it on a little longer than the instructions advises.WARNING: This product can stain your skin. So if you intend to leave it on longer than the instructions call for, you may want to wipe off any product that may gotten on your face, body, and hands. (Especially between your fingers.) Most of it scrubs off fairly easily if it does stain, and the color usually doesn't linger more than a day on my skin. I have very pale skin, so it may not be as noticeable on people with darker skin tones. The product can also stain your shower if you don't rinse it off well or let it sit too long. And it will stain white or very light towels. You may want to have a dedicated towel when using this product. And make sure your hair is pretty dry before putting on any light colored tops. You'll know how much excess pigment is at risk of transfer the next time you wash your hair because you can see some of the blue color rinse out each time until eventually your hair rinses clear again.Overall, this is the best brass fighting conditioner I've found. It allows me to extend the time I need to touch up my hair with a chemical toner. It really limits the amount of chemical damage I put my hair thru. It basically works the same as mixing a little bit of semi-permament blue dye into hair conditioner. (However, I've tried the latter "DIY hack" and prefer using the mask instead. The semi-permanent dye mixed with conditioner definitely stains my hair stronger and doesn't offer as predictable results. If I've overdone it with this hair mask, at least I know it'll gradually wash out or wash out very well with a harsh shampoo. The home hack doesn't wash out easily if you make a mistake.)If you have problems trying to maintain cool or ash hair colors due to mostly orange and copper (brassy tones), give this product a try. It may take a couple uses to start seeing the effect. After you get it right, you only need to use it every so often. If dark purple masks or conditioners aren't quite cutting it for you, try mixing a little bit of this in. If your hair is pretty healthy and you need a brass fighting product, the shampoo is worth trying... it works faster, but just know it is very drying.

It works!!
For context, my hair is bleached and toned an ash brown color. It fades to a brassy-orange color. I’ve tried purple hair products and it does not work. I heard blue is better for canceling out orange tones, so I bought the shampoo AND hair mask. Please check out my before and after photos for a comparison. Definitely a difference!!I shampoo my hair and leave it on there for about five minutes before rinsing. After rinsing, I squeeze out as much water as I can and while it’s damp, I add the hair mask. The mask is VERY blue and more pigmented than the shampoo. It does get everywhere but washes off easily. I use a generous amount of the mask on my hair. I leave it on for 10min then rinse thoroughly. I’ve only used it twice within a week so far and you can definitely see a difference in my results. It’s still KINDA brassy but WAY more toned. Honestly, amazing results with only using twice. The second time I used it, I mixed in a softening hair mask with the blue hair mask.Hair still gets toned and felt soft after too. I heard this product dries your hair and shouldn’t use too often. Worth a try adding in a moisturizing hair mask.Definitely will buy again!

Surprised how well this works!
I lightened my level 2/3 hair to a level 7. I toned my hair but it was still brassier than I would have liked. I've used this mask 3 times so far, and after the 3rd time I noticed a significant toning of my brassiness. I plan on using this once a week until my hair is the desired coolness. The mask is also very moisturizing, it acts as a deep conditioning treatment. The product is very thick but spreads through hair very easily. I've read other's reviews stating they don't like the scent; I really enjoy the scent. And it doesn't leave much of a scent after rinsing. I've found that I get the best results by spraying my hair down with a spray bottle and combing through it so it's just damp, then coat it with the toning mask and leave it on for 1 - 2 hours. It doesn't turn my scalp or skin blue, or even the lighter parts of my hair, however my fingernails do get a slight blue tinge. I would highly recommend this conditioning toning mask to anyone with darker blonde highlights.

Great for bleached hair
It didn’t do anything to my hair. I have natural medium blond hair. Use it for bleached hair. It smells ok,it’s like a moisturizing mask that leaves hair soft and shiny. Use gloves and prepare to get blue everywhere, which easily to wash away.

Great for even the darkest brunettes!
My colorist recommended this product to me and I couldn't love it more. I have very dark hair naturally with highlights throughout that we glaze to a cool ashy blond that blends with my natural grays. I started going gray pretty young and wanted to find a way to embrace my sparkles instead of hiding them. I use this product every 7-10 days, applying to clean dry or damp hair, combing through to ensure complete and even distribution. I leave this on for at least an hour, sometimes longer - that's been key for me - leave it on for way longer than recommended depending on the results you're trying to achieve! I rinse with cool water and try not to shampoo again for at least 48 hours. The product seems to moisturize with no damage and leaves my hair soft and manageable. I don't mind the smell at all. I haven't had any issues with it staining my (very pale) skin but if you don't wear gloves, make sure to wash your hands throughly after application - I have had some mild blue staining on my nails that can last for a day or two. I can go almost 12 weeks between appointments with my colorist and even he's been super impressed with how cool my color stays in between appointments. Totally worth it!
