This book is essential for anyone who even plans to step foot around cattle
Amazing read that puts basic cattle and livestock behavior and psychology into words! Even if you are never going to care for or own cattle or any livestock, the first few chapters of this book are amazing in explaining cattle breed and temperment and makes you self-aware about how your posture and gestures can drive cattle in certain directions or allow you to gain their trust. This book has many illustrations and gives diagrams about how to build corrals and handling chutes that are humane and cause less stress and increase safety for the animals and handlers. Plans on building are included in detail! Use this book to build a handling facility for your livestock, or improve upon an existing one, of if you're just working in a job that involves rounding up livestock into pens-- reading this book is a must!

Excellent resource for larger-scale livestock farmers.
Excellent book!! Beginning with how animals perceive the world and outside threats, then moving into how genetics and early experiences affect an animal's temperament, the author explains how to handle livestock using the animals' instincts and minimize stress. Over half of the book is devoted to creating low-stress handling systems and facility plans. This is a very useful book for larger-scale livestock operations. For smaller-scale farmers, I would suggest the book"Temple Grandin's Guide to Working With Farm Animals." I highly recommend this book. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!

information overload
This is a book that should sell for much higher for those with livestocks particularlly cattle. I was looking for a book or something alluding to building a cattle corral. Well this book is information overload for my measlly (sp) quest. I enjoyed and continue to enjoy this book, I just hope my sistes does not try to steal this book since she married into a family with cattle. The information within the book provided me with answers to my questions. Over all the book is a whole lot more then just hints, tips and methods of building a cattle corral.

Not for the small scale rancher.
This book has a lot of information. It is written very well, and there are a lot of very good illustrations. However, this is not for the small scale cattleman completely. I wish I had known that the illustrated guide to cattle compounds are more for the large scale cattle operation rather than the small scale. We are an extremely small operation. We neither have the room, money or the need for the facilities in the book. If I had 200+ head this would be helpful, but with our single digit herd we just don't have the need for such grand plans.

This is Temple's course book
I have only dipped into parts of this book, but it is the one that Temple uses for her undergraduate students in Colorado. The drawings are excellent, and everything is done with precision and clarity, just like Temple's lectures and books in general. This book was cheaper on Amazon in the UK than in the US for some reason, but I live in the UK so that was convenient. When you read Temple Grandin's books (I have read others of hers on animals and autism), it sometimes seems like she is just stating the obvious. But in fact what her books do is explain things clearly, without any dressing or "flannel". This comes across in her public speaking and her lecture style too. She is passionate about her work, and she conveys this in written form too. Truly a remarkable woman!

This is not the book for you if you want a very simple cattle handling system
I bought this book because I wanted to make a cattle handling system that would work, but the drawings are unbelievably complicated and Im not sure Ill be able to use them. As far as the information on animal handling is concerned, Ive only just started reading it so I cant say how good it is., but Im very interested in the concept.

Obra Maestra
La Biblia para el ganadero de cualquier país. Traducirla al castellano sería un acierto. Adoro a Temple Grandin y sus conocimientos. Los intento poner en práctica a diario en mi granja. Gracias por este libro...
