Best edition ever!
This second edition has more information than before, for somebody interested in the history of medicine this is the Bible!! Well written in a different way than straight history. Very educational.

Very dry and quite UK oriented.
I think this is a college course. In my opinion it speaks to much about what the British did and has no empathy for all the extraordinary minds that contributed to all that we know today about life, diseases, and unbelievably complicated biological processes. Medicine, more than any science was developed eliminating huge ammounts of ignorance, false tracks, almost unsourmountable obstacles - a process that is still going on, that has achieved amazing results - which, however, may not be the best outcome for our Planet as a whole.

Good but dry
I enjoyed the book but its painting the picture of the history of medicine seemed a little bland and the overarching theme of the writing did too. It was really good but lacked a kind of narrative that made it truly "enjoyable". Still great book though.

A detailed review of everything
Very inclusive- a plus and a minus. It includes every detail. Every little detail. Every single one. Good for an academic paper, perhaps, but not so good for mass market.

A comprehensive primer in medical history, albeit a disjointed one.
The Cambridge history of Medicine is an anthology of essays on different periods and aspects of medical history. Contrary to what might be expected, this book covers a wide range of topics and includes much modern discussion. Included in this work is a vast history from the development of ancient medicine to the history of the rise of modern forms of medical care. What Porter and the contributing authors do well is portray the history of medicine in a sociopolitical context - there is not an emphasis on the doldrums of history, that is, if one is looking for a history book filled with dates, timelines, and minutiae, they have the wrong book. This work certainly has much variability in the quality and levity of writing as would be expected for such a broad compilation, nevertheless, it was difficult to find concordance between the different chapters contained within it.Nevertheless, it is hard to find a book of medical history matching its breadth, depth, and diversity.
