Can the side/mesh pocket fit a normal 16oz water bottle?

Yes, you can put a regular bottle of water in the outside mesh pockets.

Is the bag machine washable?

Yes it is. I've washed mine several times and it still looks great! I wash it in cold water and only dry it for about 10 minutes, then I let it air dry - looks brand new!
