It does smell like mar. to me too.

Do you need to start with kindling. Or do you just light

You can just light it, but it is a little difficult to get it to start. You really have to go at it with a lighter to get it to start up.

Use alone or in combination ?

It can be used alone for about 15-20 minutes, or in combination with pine needles, dried leaves,cotton or wood pellets. (to last longer)

Do you break these up and light them or burn as is in pellet form?

I leave them whole, use 4 per light, and put other things in with them. I put in a pinecone to create a chimney, then a page of newspaper, and maybe some leaves. Then I light it. Once I get that going, I add more fuel, such as burlap, sticks, dry leaves. It takes a few minutes to get it going good. The pellets work well because they are quick to light, then burn slow.

They work.
