Can the middle shelf be removed in order to set a tall trash container on the bottom shelf?

There is an X-brace that helps stabilize the rack. However, the majority of the stability comes from bolted-on shelves. So, eliminating the middle shelf will adversely affect the overall design. OTH, removing the shelf also reduces the shelf load. The middle shelf was intended to have a capacity of 44 pounds. Assuming that you do not overload any of the other shelves, the reduction in load tends to offset the stability issues. My conclusion is that removing the middle shelf would be safe to do. Since you are altering the design, it's especially important to ensure all fasteners are properly connected. I'd also be careful about eccentric loading (do your best to spread the load as evenly as possible) and do not exceed the recommended weight loads per shelf. BTW, I have my rack partially assembled at the present time with the middle shelf omitted. From a purely seat-of-the-pants point of view (not analytical), the rack appears to be sufficiently robust to work in such a configuration. I have it assembled this way because I'm trying to figure out a way of modifying the middle shelf so that I can fit two layers of plastic bins across the bottom. I need to free up a couple of inches in vertical space.

How heavy is the box? I am in a 3rd floor apartment and have to get it up 2 flights by myself.

Description says item weights 46 pounds. I'd estimate the cardboard box weighs maybe another 5 pounds. Overall, about 50 pounds (give or take a couple of pounds). But like Kelly said, the weight isn't the problem - the problem is the bulk. It's not easy to haul around such a large box. A hand truck with very large wheels might work going up the stairs. Other than that, I'd suggest looping rope around the box (or using cargo straps) to tow it up the stairs. Be VERY CAREFUL to secure your grip and to maintain your balance as you horse the box up the stairs. It would be unfortunate if you let the box slip down the stairs. It would be doubly unfortunate if the box hit someone behind you.
