does this torch need a battery?

It has a built in rechargeable internal battery. You charge this battery with the hand crank dynamo or solar panel. You can't put any other batteries in this torch.

How difficult is this to wind up, please? Buying for elderly parent who hasn't lots of strength in wrists any more. Thanks

Sorry for delay in responding. This torch is the best - not at all difficult to wind up, to get a really strong beam = 3 strengths - low, full beam and flash. Due to it's strange shape it's particularly easy to get good grip = highly recommend, especially for the elderly.

is this torch safe for an 8 year old child to use

I would imagine that it's safe. I wouldn't encourage children to dismantle it though. But this is a sturdy little beast, and it is bright, so do explain about not shining the beam in people's eyes. All our children had torches in their stockings by 8 and those had batteries which are potentially dangerous but the pluses outweigh the minuses when you add it all up.
