It was off when I received it. But then tapped in it after I put in on tank, and it worked

Depends … how old the battery is, how often it gets used, exposure to elements… At ~$9.99 a unit probably easier and cheaper to replace unit than battery.

Q: Thinking of using this in my aquaponics set up and wondering does it will work on the plastic IBC totes I keep the fish in?

I use it on my 20 gallon aquarium and it works greta. dont know if that will help you but I have a feeling it will work anywhere!

Q: Can you change it to display in Celsius?

i didnt see anything on the box that says it changes
