A very nice product!
This Lenovo laptop looks just like the ThinkPads I used to have at work. No wonder: Lenovo acquired IBM's personal computer business some time ago. This is not a super-slim, bright and shiny, superficially stunning machine from an unknown producer. Instead it is noticeably heavier than many laptops, and it reminds me of a brick you-know-what, in other words it is a 'built to last' product, with a very nice keyboard. Although it's refurbished, mine looked new. The original Windows 7 (there is still a sticker on the case) has of course been replaced with Windows 10, and with a proper SSD 'hard disk' and 8 Gb of RAM, it is very fast, and silent. As well as the trackpad that all laptops boast (because they are very cheap to make), this also has a 'nipple', a red artefact rather like the rubber you might find on the end of a pencil, which (for me) works far more easily and accurately than a trackpad. You can of course use either, or use a mouse instead. On my sample, Windows 10 was already installed and working, and I was set up as 'user', with no password (quite handy, for working at home). Of course it's easy enough to add or configure users, as you would expect. You can also (as you would expect) use an external monitor, or the internal screen, or both. So: this machine is not the cheapest, nor the shiniest, but it is sturdy, well-made, and runs very fast. (I have been using a couple of laptops with eMMC drives, and this blows them away.) My daughter says that this looks "old-fashioned". If that worries you, don't buy this. I'm very happy with it.

Unrivalled spec for the price...
I was looking for a commuter laptop for basic scripting and killing time on the train. I (like you) considered the options from Asus and Dell - but taking into account 64gb emc storage, or 4gb of RAM, I felt the tradeoff between having battery life and performance didn't really matter (considering my journey was 30 mins seated) - and having a flimsy Asus/Dell option with a Celery processor was never going to inspire work....The laptop is small enough for a rucksack, albeit a little thicker than most (on a tapered width it goes from 1.1-2.7cm I think) but for that extra thickness you get solid connectivity options (hdmi, usb etc), a great IBM keyboard that feels clunky and a screen on a 180 degree bezel. Thinkpads are used in space by NASA, so if you don't think that's cool you need to have a long hard look at yourself.A couple of pointers;1. A 11.6" carry case will hold this - I bought the black, waterproof one (the name escapes me, but you'll see it on here).2. Run a Win10 'decrapify' script from the internet once you get the laptop - this will remove all the nonsense, improve battery life and boot speed.3. Set the laptop to 'Hibernate' when the lid is closed, this will keep your battery life solid and let you get off the train without having to power off the unit, with barely any depletion in power.4. The battery in a 6 cell, battery life is around 2.5hrs on a full charge. You can improve this to nearly 4hrs using battery optimizer and the tips above. Or buy a 9 cell battery from amazon to make it 6-7hrsupdate:5.I can confirm I get around 3.5 to 4hrs battery life if hibernation is used between usage and battery saver used all the time. Great bit of kit!6.the condition of the unit is brand new the unit i received has no marks or signs of use.Hope this helps, enjoy!

Ordered X 230, received X 240, ... happy with it so far, other than the flaky touchpad
Ordered an X 230, received an X 240, which seems to be a slightly better machineRefurbished machine, looks like it has been repainted on the keyboard, looks and feels more like new than second hand. The X 240 starts up and runs quickly and super quietly (SSD rather than HDD)the machine I received has a main battery that protrudes 1cm underneath the body of the laptop and which actually makes it a bit more comfortable to use, it tilts the keyboad slightly.Perhaps because of this ... the X240 has a huge battery life. Without cranking the settings to give max battery life, it's giving 6-7 hours of more or less continuous screen-on usage. With just the smaller onboard battery, battery life is more like 1hr.Limitations: not many so far.- the X 240 touchpad is a bit temperamental, and this seems to be getting worse. So I may need to return it for repair. From a bit of research online I gather the touchpad is a known irritant on the X 240.- the keyboard is mostly fine but the carriage return / 'enter' key is too small. chunky fingers like mine end up doing lots of #s/- Screen is quite harsh especially for prolonged use. Too much blue LED light - not great for your eyes - use one of the free apps for managing the colour settings especially at night time.- Screen is a tad grainy at 1366 x 768 resolution, if you are accustomed to full HD.The X 240 weighs 1.3kg without the main protrding battery, 1.6kg with the main battery, 2.1kg with the (3.5m) power lead and adaptor. All in all - it is pretty good and seems durable, its borderline 4-5 stars, the ropey touchpad being the main issue!

Extremely disappointed
I bought a 'renewed' laptop for my son for Christmas. He picked it out in Amazon, and I was hesitant as it was a refurbished laptop, but he insisted that Amazon is the best and it will be great. Unfortunately, upon turning it on the screen as completely dark, unable to read anything on the screen. We tried everything to brighten the screen, check power, etc and to no avail. So, we are returning it. My young teenage son was very disappointed as the spec on this laptop was what he was looking for and hoped to use it over Christmas. We are waiting to hear back now from Amazon as they contact the seller and send us a return label. I am sure this will be handled professionally by Amazon, but it is disappointing that it came to us not working properly.
