The Human Machine (Dover Anatomy for Artists)

NOT BAD
This book promised more than it delivers, please do not get me wrong. It explains the anatomy perfectly and in the simpliest way possible, hence the 3 stars. But it is the worst illustrated book on the subject of anatomy. I guess it may motivate you to do better and the price is NOT BAD. Do not be put off, there is something to gain depending on what you are looking for.

Kind of Disappointed
when i bought this book i have to admit i was abit excited but once open i was truely disappointed by the fact that the drawings were so poorly illustrated as if printed on an old 1960s printer. having said this there are some good points about this book, bridgman breaks it down into simple shapes we all learnt at nursery school. As an artist i have always found it hard to draw the human body but having this book has shown me excellent skills on how to draw human body parts and the human figure. i havent had enough of bridgman i have recently ordered a few more books by him. try them you'll get a tip or two

Indispensable
I don't think anyone could ever accuse George Bridgman of over-working his drawings: they do tend to be quite sketchy and are not always immaculately transferred to print (though the paper quality of this book is excellent). The text can also be rather heavy-going, though there's a lot of information there when you get used to his writing style. Where Bridgman's work scores is it's obsessive but accessible detail and thoroughness. I really like the way he shows where muscles are attached to the underlying bones and how they wedge together - it gives you a real understanding of the body as a working mechanism rather than a set of static diagrams. And the sketches, for all their roughness, are brilliantly vigorous and dynamic. If you're interested in figure drawing, do yourself a big favour and buy this book.
