A Wonderful LIsten
This was such a lovely audiobook! I’m so glad I bought it and listened to it straight away. It’s become a new favourite that I’ll definitely listen to again and again.Christopher Timothy who played James Heriot in the TV series, narrates it perfectly and was joy to listen to.I visited the Yorkshire Dales last summer, and it was wonderful going back there via this audiobook. Hearing the descriptions of the scenery and of course the different stories was a very welcome distraction, that whisked me back in time to 1930s Yorkshire. There were some hilarious moments throughout this memoir, and my particular favourites were when the pigs escape and go on the rampage in Darrowby, the prank phone calls between Tristan and James, the mixed up packages and nasty Mr Cranford.Of course I mustn’t forget to mention Mrs Pumphrey and Tricki Woo! I remember them from the TV series and it was so good to hear James’ first and subsequent encounters with them.I definitely recommend this story on audiobook especially if you enjoy memoirs featuring animals.

An easy gentle read
This is a lovely read and really enjoyable. Nothing happens quickly but full of pleasant characters and warm fires. A cosy book.

A good omnibus, but beware of the others
This is a good cheap way of reading the first two volumes of James Herriot's heart warming memoires. All chapters are present and correct, and in the right order. The only thing missing is a two page postscript originally in If Only They Could Talk. To be fair though, it's inclusion here would look odd and break the overall flow of the omnibus so it's omission is understandable. However if, like me, you are wanting to experience the memoires in their original form ditch the last three chapters here, and the second omnibus. It quickly became clear to me that these contain the content of volumes 3 and 4 but the chapter order is all over the place and some are even missing altogether. I, personally, have decided to spend a little bit extra and buy volumes 3 to 8 individually so I can be sure to get everything and in the correct order. None of that takes away from the great value for money this first omnibus represents.

A Yorkshire Vets life in the Dales
Loved this book, each chapter was its own wee story. Starting when James Herriot a newly qualified Vet arrives in the Dales for his first job and meets his rather eccentric new boss , his dour housekeeper and pack of dogs. It's not long before he's thrown in the deep end treating the Dales folks animals , whilst barely understanding what they say. A lovely life affirming humorous book , suitable for all readers. I literally laughed out loud.

Lifelong love ... Animals, weather, people And Yorkshire.
I read these in my childhood years because they made me laugh so often and the storyline of James's life is the ultimate soap in its way. He was fantastic at painting a scene and as good at describing people as he was at giving personality to the animals he treated. I can see why it was felt it would make good TV but in fact I absolutely loathed the series. In retrospect I also learned an enormous amount about life in those times, animals and their care, the personality of Yorkshire and its people, the effects of the War and changes in medicine and pharmaceuticals, that have stayed with me to to this day. But those things just happened as the plot unrolled.I re-read these a few years back - ALL the Herriot books - and still found them compulsive reading. I'd pick the next one up as soon as I finished the last page. Now I have digital versions I can take anywhere, if I want to step back into the busy, troubled, hilarious, sad, beautiful and heartwarming world of a vet in one of the UK's most gorgeous and unforgiving regions.
